September 30, 2025, Hranice na Moravě Synagogue

The Jews in Hranice never formed a large group in relation to the total population, yet their social influence in the 19th century was very strong, especially in the development of Hranice industry. Until the mid-20th century, the largest Hranice factory was the textile factory of the Jewish Heller family (later Karnola), founded in 1844, and the liqueur factories of Sigmund Wolf and Abraham Wolf had an even longer tradition. The original small brick synagogue building was replaced in 1863 by a new building in the then Moorish-Byzantine style. It then served as a place of worship until 1940. Fortunately, subsequent plans to demolish it were not implemented and in 1943 it was adapted to the needs of the city museum. It was brought to its current impressive appearance, thanks to which it is one of the characteristic dominants of the historical center, by a successful reconstruction in the mid-1990s. For almost thirty years it served as a gallery for organizing art exhibitions. Occasionally cultural events are held here. From January 1, 2024, the building of the Hranice synagogue will pass into the hands of the owner, who is the Czechoslovak Hussite Church.

The Hranice Synagogue is one of the monuments commemorating the community of Hranice Jews who came here at the beginning of the 17th century. Today's Janáčkova Street, leading from Pernštejnské Square and ending with an arcade at the synagogue, was the former Židovská Street, where the Jewish minority gradually settled. Jews owned a total of 17 houses here, but most of them were demolished or rebuilt during the 20th century.

Helfštýn Castle was founded at the beginning of the fourteenth century. Its significant expansion occurred at the turn of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries at the latest, when it belonged to the lords of Kravaře. Another extensive late Gothic reconstruction was carried out by the Pernštejns from the last quarter of the fifteenth century. The last family to reside in the castle were the Bruntál family of Vrbno, under whom a large Renaissance palace was completed. At the beginning of the Thirty Years' War, the castle was briefly occupied by the estates' army, but later it was home to an imperial garrison that withstood two sieges. In later times, the castle was used only for military purposes and fell into disrepair from the second half of the eighteenth century. In the mid-nineteenth century, the first modifications were carried out, the aim of which was to make the ruins accessible to visitors and organize cultural events. Monument renovations from the second half of the twentieth century disrupted the historical appearance and adapted the ruin for the needs of the annual meeting of artistic blacksmiths Hefaiston. The Helfštýn castellan is Jan Lauro

The resistance organization Hory Hostýnské was, like the better-known Svetlana, founded on the foundations of the anti-Nazi resistance – the Jan Žižka partisan brigade. It was established in June 1948 and its first commander was Josef Čuba (1893–1951) from Rajnochovice. The group prepared for a possible nationwide anti-communist coup (including collecting weapons, which it hid in forest caches). In addition, it helped persecuted citizens in the region, spread information through leaflet campaigns, and intimidated local zealous communist officials.
