Date trees can grow up to 30 meters (100 feet). Slow-growing, some have been known to live up to 100 years. They need dry, arid conditions and plenty of water to withstand the intense heat.

The narrow and twisted โ€œslot canyonโ€ is a unique and interesting side canyon with vertical walls. There is a shallow river which you should have no difficulty crossing it. You will find several desert creatures, such as the zebra tailed lizard and even friendly scorpions. Of course, take much care when coming into close contact with wild animals.

The name originates from the Spanish word, amargo (bitter) and a shortened version of agua amargosa (bitter water) possibly referring to the alkaline water. The river winds through the Amargosa Canyon, straddling the Sperry Hills and the Dumont Hills, before entering into the Dumont Dunes in the northern Mojave Desert.
