The Virgin River flows through the park, creating a unique riparian ecosystem filled with marshes, natural pools and even swamps! Plus, hundreds of seeps and springs feed into our river and creeks, supporting all kinds of unique wildlife and vegetation. The information board reads: "A swamp in the desert? Strange but true. You can see the water source that is feeding the swamp on the wet cliff face above. The underlying rock in this area cannot absorb all of the water runoff. Consequently the thin layer of soil covering the rock remains continually saturated. The unique assemblage of plants you see here has adapted to this special environment. Help protect this wetland by staying on the trail."

A very crowded path. Since it's a relatively easy route, it's very busy.

Absolutely! The Riverside Walk is a fantastic choice, leading you along the Virgin River and serving as the gateway to The Narrows. Zion Wilderness is a geological marvel. On many family-friendly trails, you'll encounter towering sandstone cliffs and deep canyons carved by the Virgin River. Iconic formations like the Great White Throne are visible from various viewpoints. The Canyon Overlook Trail provides stunning panoramic views of Zion Canyon. You can also explore the unique geological processes at places like the 'Weeping Rock' (part of the Emerald Pools area) where water seeps through sandstone, creating hanging gardens.
Yes, for families looking for a loop experience, the Emerald Pools and Kayenta Trail Loop is an excellent choice. This easy route allows you to experience diverse scenery, including natural pools and canyon views, bringing you back to your starting point without retracing your steps.
Spring (April to May) and Fall (September to October) are generally considered the best times for family hiking in Zion Wilderness. The weather is milder, and the crowds are typically less intense than in summer. Spring brings blooming wildflowers, while fall offers vibrant autumn colors. Summer can be very hot, and winter may bring snow and ice, impacting trail accessibility.
In Zion National Park, dogs are generally restricted to paved surfaces and the Pa'rus Trail. Most other hiking trails, including many of the family-friendly ones, do not permit dogs. Always check the specific trail regulations before heading out. For more detailed information on pet policies, you can visit the official National Park Service website: nps.gov/zion.
Parking within Zion National Park can be very limited, especially during peak season. The park operates a mandatory shuttle system for much of the main canyon from spring through fall, which is highly recommended for accessing trailheads. Consider parking in Springdale and taking the free town shuttle to the park's pedestrian entrance, then transferring to the park shuttle. Always check the current shuttle schedule and parking availability before your visit on the official park website.
While many family-friendly trails do not require permits, some popular or more challenging routes within Zion National Park do. For instance, Angels Landing requires a permit. It's always best to check the official National Park Service website for the most up-to-date information on permit requirements for specific trails, especially if your family plans to venture beyond the easiest paths. You can find more details at nps.gov/zion.

Zion Wilderness is home to diverse wildlife. On family-friendly trails, you might spot mule deer, various bird species like peregrine falcons and California condors (especially soaring high above), and smaller mammals such as squirrels and chipmunks. Keep an eye out for lizards and other reptiles basking in the sun. Remember to observe wildlife from a distance and never feed animals.
To avoid the busiest crowds, consider exploring trails in the Kolob Canyons section of Zion National Park, located in the northwest corner. This area offers equally stunning red-rock wilderness but is often less frequented than the main canyon. While specific family-friendly routes here are not detailed in our guide, it's a good general strategy for a quieter experience. Additionally, hiking early in the morning or later in the afternoon can help you avoid peak visitor times on popular trails.
