Group shelters, part of the "Position at Spaarndam" from the early 20th century. From https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Positie_bij_Spaarndam : In 1917, the position was expanded with a representation in the forecourt consisting of trenches and dozens of concrete group shelters. A front wall was added with a front moat in front of it over the entire length. These defenses are located to the left and right of the Slaperdijk a few hundred meters west of the line wall. The First World War ended before the work was finished. Shortly after the war, a small part, on the front wall, was completed. Current situation Many features of the original position have been preserved. The military and inundation works are still visible in the terrain and many objects are provincial monuments. The later group shelters south of the Slaperdijk are still clearly visible in the terrain, but on the north side many have been absorbed into the Munition Forest. The latter is a large ammunition storage facility built in the fifties, but no longer in use as such. The buildings and trees largely obscure the view of the group shelters.

Beautiful museum about the origin and drainage of the Haarlemmermeer

The Waterwolf is a reminder of the lake that was here before the Haarlemmermeer existed. It was a wild lake and due to storms and peat excavations it became increasingly larger and more dangerous. Many villages disappeared in the waves during storms. In 1852 the lake was drained and the Haarlemmermeerpolder was created. The statue is 20 m long and 6 m high, made by Maree Blok and Bas Lugthart. On the bridge you can see the letters `HMP´. They stand for `hameipoort`, the supporting structure (gate) for the hinges to open and close the drawbridge. (Source: https://liefsuithaarlemmermeer.nl/vijfhuizen/vijfhuizerbrug/ )
