The city's central train station was put into operation in 1862 when a section of the Czech Western Railway from Prague to Pilsen was opened. The current station building was inaugurated in 1907. It was built in the Neo-Renaissance and Art Nouveau styles (particularly recognizable in the stucco decoration and metal elements). In the 1950s, statues of a metallurgist and a shunter were placed in the hall. They are still standing here today. The frescoes with motifs of Socialist Realism in the lower hall have also been preserved. Another characteristic of the building is its imposing, forty-meter-high dome.

One of the city's most important cultural monuments is the Josef Kajetan Tyl Theatre (Divadlo Josefa Kajetána Tyla). It has three stages: the Grand Theatre in the original Neo-Renaissance building from 1902, the New Theatre, and the Small Stage in the New Theatre. It was designed by the architect Antonín Balšánek (1865-1921). The hall of the Grand Theatre today, after renovations in the 1980s, seats 444 spectators, while originally it could accommodate around 1100 people.

Very beautiful station with a long corridor and some artworks in the hall.

Externally, it has a lot of similarity to the Vienna State Opera, of course the theater is much smaller.

It's a beautiful theater that's definitely worth a visit. We saw the opera Iris there, and it was a truly impressive performance. The ensemble stages the piece superbly, bringing the narrative to life. The set is very dynamic and carries the performance with perfect lighting. The costumes are also very beautiful and fit the story perfectly. The orchestra was also outstanding, as it had been on our other visits.
