January 25, 2026, Château de Saint-Florent-sur-Cher

Almost no one knows that… Under the Château de Saint-Florent-sur-Cher lie remnants of a much older defense and trading network along the Cher River, dating back to before the current castle. The site was already important before the castle. Even before the 13th century, a strategic crossing over the Cher River existed here. Not a bridge like today, but a ford and later a primitive crossing. So the château wasn't built "just like that." It literally stands on an old thoroughfare.

The Villette pond is a pretty body of water of about 50 hectares. You can discover it by taking the path that borders it on the north side and take a short break to admire many species of birds such as ducks, herons, kingfishers and perhaps even swans, especially in winter. Unfortunately, there are no other paths to go all the way around it. So I head back towards La Châtre via the very pleasant little Duriaux road.

October 13, 2023, Église Saint-Cyr

If you're looking for a historical and spiritual hike, you might want to visit the Église Saint-Cyr d'Issoudun, a Catholic church that dates back to the 9th century. The church has a beautiful stained glass window from the 15th century, representing the lives of Saint Cyr and Saint Julitte, as well as six large candlesticks offered by Louis XIV. You can also admire the 17th century statue of the Virgin Mary and the staffs of the gardeners' and winegrowers' guilds. The church is open Tuesday to Sunday.
