A beautiful church at the end of the Wachau, right next to it you can find the ruin of the Roman castle.

Göttweig Abbey is often called the "Austrian Montecassino" - and as soon as you stand in front of it, you understand why. It sits majestically on a 422-meter-high hill on the eastern edge of the Wachau, directly opposite Krems and Mautern. The abbey, as we see it today, is the result of a gigantic reconstruction after a devastating fire in 1718. The famous architect Johann Lucas von Hildebrandt (who also designed the Belvedere Palace in Vienna) planned a huge, palace-like complex. Due to a lack of funds, however, only about two-thirds of the original plan was completed - which does not make the complex any less impressive.

The parish church of St. Stephen is the spiritual heart of the city and closely linked to the history of St. Severinus. The church stands in a historically extremely charged location. It was built directly in the northeast corner of the former Roman cavalry fort. Parts of today's church walls even use ancient masonry as a foundation. It is believed that as early as the 5th century, at the time of St. Severinus, an early Christian place of worship existed on this site or in the immediate vicinity. The choir (the front part with the altar) is late Gothic and dates from the 14th century. The nave was given a Baroque style in the 17th and 18th centuries. The mighty barrel vault is particularly impressive.

The Krems Gate is a Gothic structure dating from around 1400 and was part of the city's fortifications. It consists of a tower approximately 20 meters high with a gateway, an 8-meter-high porch (facing east), and an adjacent building with a staircase, which serves as a meeting room for the Wachau Traditional Costume and Heritage Association. The view is a welcome change from the otherwise dull Danube cycle path.

From the Danube Cycle Path, the Theiß power plant is a striking industrial complex on the banks of the Danube. Its tall chimneys and large halls dominate the landscape, while the district heating storage tank stands out as a round, gleaming silver structure. This contrasts sharply with the natural river scenery. The site also houses a substation and the largest district heating storage tank in Europe.

Eugen Bailoni is closely linked to the Wachau apricot tradition. Located on Steiner Landstraße in Stein an der Donau is the long-established Eugen Bailoni 1st Wachau Apricot Distillery, renowned for generations for its processing of Wachau apricots. Here, apricot liqueurs, fine brandies, and other specialties are produced, contributing significantly to the region's culinary identity and making the Bailoni name famous far beyond the Wachau.
