The chapel was built by Johann Nepomuk Höfelmayr, born in Oberbeuren in 1815. Johann Höfelmayr was a wealthy landowner in the Kaufbeuren suburbs, on the right bank of the Wertach River. After his first wife died in 1857, he wanted to build a chapel in a scenic location above the Wertach Valley in faithful memory of his wife.
