The Kyll is a typical Eifel river: relatively narrow, fast-flowing and very close to nature. Southeast of Kronenburg, it forms meandering floodplain landscapes with wet meadows, alder and willow stands. Precisely these sections are protected as the "Kyllaue" nature reserve because many other river sections of the Kyll have been straightened or more heavily used.

The Ermberg is a dry, warm limestone slope with rare nutrient-poor grasslands. The area was placed under protection in the early 2000s and is ecologically valuable because it is home to plant and animal species that depend on nutrient-poor limestone soils. In the past, large parts were open semi-dry grasslands; much was later afforested. Today, efforts are being made to preserve open spaces.
