The name “Estagnol” evokes a small pond (a name that echoes the many wetlands that characterize this part of the Hérault coast). Unfortunately, the pond is not visible from the greenway and remains hidden by vegetation. Passing here by bike, you cycle alongside one of the most famous hydraulic structures in France: the Canal du Midi, designed by Pierre-Paul Riquet in the 17th century to connect the Atlantic to the Mediterranean. In Portiragnes, the canal reaches a very low coastal plain, close to ancient ponds and wetlands. A little anecdote about the area: this geography posed a real challenge for the canal builders. In this low-lying plain, during heavy rains or floods, water could quickly accumulate. It was therefore necessary to allow excess water to cross or bypass the canal without damaging it. The engineers thus developed various hydraulic structures, notably weirs, which allow excess water to be discharged into the neighboring natural areas.

🚲 Canal du Midi – cycling through Southern France For me, the Canal du Midi is now simply part of Southern France. 🇫🇷🌿 Whether around Vias, Portiragnes, Cers or further towards Béziers – you always encounter this beautiful canal by bike. It was built in the 17th century and connects Toulouse with the Mediterranean region over about 240 kilometers. Together with other waterways, it created a connection between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean. Since 1996, the Canal du Midi has been a UNESCO World Heritage site. With a bike, the variety is especially great: sometimes you ride on well-maintained asphalt, then again on gravel or narrow natural paths right by the water. 🚲 In between, you pass under old trees, past houseboats, small harbors, locks, and historical structures. Especially in our area, there is a lot to discover: the extraordinary Ouvrages du Libron near Vias, the locks and bridges around Portiragnes, and of course, further towards Béziers, the impressive Pont-canal de l’Orb and the famous locks of Fonseranes. What I particularly like: On the Canal, you don't have to constantly chase a specific destination. Just follow the water and see what comes along the way. Sometimes you stop at a bridge, watch a houseboat, or discover a small restaurant right on the canal somewhere. 😎☀️ For us, the Canal du Midi by bike is definitely one of the most beautiful ways to explore this region – relaxed, varied, and always with new little discoveries along the way. 🚲🇫🇷👌🏼 Greetings Marcus ✌🏼

🚲 Canal du Midi – cycling through Southern France For me, the Canal du Midi is now an integral part of Southern France. 🇫🇷🌿 Whether around Vias, Portiragnes, Cers, or further towards Béziers – when cycling, you'll repeatedly encounter this beautiful canal. 🌿 L’Estagnol near Portiragnes A small, somewhat hidden wetland and pond area near Portiragnes, which could easily be overlooked on a tour through the area. 🌿🚲 The name „Estagnol“ comes from Occitan and denotes a small pond or body of water – and that is exactly what you find here: densely overgrown banks, reeds, and a calm water surface in the middle of the Mediterranean landscape. Especially by bike, L’Estagnol is a nice little detour when you are traveling between Portiragnes, the vineyards, and the Canal du Midi. Not a spectacular destination, but rather one of those quiet places that make up the charm of the area. 😊👌🏼 Greetings Marcus ✌🏼

The Canal du Midi, formerly the Royal Canal, is a 17th-century technical feat designed by Pierre-Paul Riquet to connect the Atlantic to the Mediterranean. Today, it is mainly a place for relaxation and discovery, where heritage, nature, and conviviality blend together.

Singletrack to do on foot or by MTB, we go from ochre to white. Caution, it can get a bit slippery in very dry weather.

At the Portiragnes lock, you enter a section almost at sea level, where the canal crosses former salt marshes and wind-swept wetlands. Built at the end of the 17th century, this single lock is notable not only for its shape but also for the landscape it heralds: that of the Aude and Hérault coastline.
