Las Canteras de El Turro, located in the hamlet of El Turro (Cacín), are a natural landscape that merges geology and monumental history. This enclave became famous for having provided the pudding stone (a type of veined conglomerate) used to carve the 64 column shafts of the Palace of Charles V in the Alhambra of Granada. The outcrops of this rock, the result of geological deposits from the Cacín River, became the ‘Quarry of the Emperor’ during the Renaissance. It is still possible to contemplate the mother rock from which the key elements of the great Renaissance palatial work emerged. The site is a point of interest in itself, as in the vicinity of the quarry lies the famous Peñón del Niño El Turro, an immense, emblematic boulder of the town. Furthermore, remains of prehistoric tombs have been documented nearby, underscoring the millennia-old occupation of this territory. The rock (the Peñón) is located on the same road at the entrance to the village.

The Hermitage of Our Lady of the Angels is located on the Camino de la Trucha, which runs parallel to the Alhama or Marchán River, at the foot of the impressive Alhama Cliffs. There are two routes to reach the hermitage from the village. One is a wide dirt road that begins at the school, and another, which we liked the most, leads through one of the most beautiful places in Alhama. It begins at the old Pérez cinema, passes through the flour mills, and passes through some washhouses carved into the rock itself.
