Beautiful water reservoir surrounding with forest and rocks. Great views to Orgues de Benitandus. Unfortunately the level of water is dramatically low nowadays. It's even possible to visit remaining of an old building (mill?) on the river bed which looks like it was under water for a long time.

Leaving Benitandús, on the right bank of the River Veo, there is a 1 km path that leads to the head of the reservoir and the starting point of a via ferrata. Good views of the Orguens on the opposite bank.

A few meters from the road is the access to the Onda reservoir, a very quiet place in wonderful surroundings.

Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of terrain can I expect on no-traffic cycling routes around Espadilla?

Espadilla, located in Quepos, Costa Rica, is characterized by a dramatic convergence of rainforest and Pacific coastline. While traditional road touring cycling is challenging due to steep, narrow, and winding roads with heavy traffic, the region excels in mountain biking. Therefore, 'no traffic' routes are likely to involve jungle paths, rainforest trails, and possibly gravel sections, offering a more rugged experience suitable for robust touring or gravel bikes. Expect varied surfaces and elevation changes as you navigate through this biodiverse landscape.

Are there any family-friendly options for traffic-free cycling in Espadilla?

Given the region's emphasis on mountain biking and the challenging terrain, dedicated family-friendly, flat, and paved 'no traffic' touring cycling routes are limited. However, some guided mountain bike tours offer options for beginners and less experienced riders, which might be suitable for families with older children comfortable with off-road cycling. These tours often focus on jungle paths and can be tailored to different skill levels.

What natural features or landmarks can I see along these routes?

Cycling through the Espadilla area offers incredible opportunities to experience its rich natural beauty. You can expect to encounter lush rainforests, potentially spot diverse wildlife like monkeys, sloths, and exotic birds, and enjoy coastal vistas. Some mountain biking tours even lead to hidden waterfalls, offering a refreshing stop. The trails often provide views of the stunning landscapes within and around Manuel Antonio National Park, including the dramatic convergence of rainforest and Pacific coastline.

What is the best time of year to go cycling in Espadilla to avoid traffic?

The best time to visit Espadilla for outdoor activities, including cycling, is generally during the dry season, from December to April. During this period, the weather is more predictable with less rain, making trails more accessible and enjoyable. While 'no traffic' routes are inherently designed to avoid cars, the dry season also means more comfortable riding conditions overall. However, this is also peak tourist season, so while trails might be car-free, they could see more foot or bike traffic from other visitors.

Are there any specific regulations or permits needed for cycling in the area, especially near Manuel Antonio National Park?

While general cycling on public roads doesn't typically require special permits, cycling within protected areas like Manuel Antonio National Park has strict regulations. Most of the park's trails are for hiking only. If you're considering cycling near or within park boundaries, especially on designated mountain biking trails, it's advisable to check with local tour operators or park authorities for specific rules and any required permits. Access to the park itself requires an entrance fee.

Can I find loop routes for traffic-free cycling, or are they mostly point-to-point?

Many of the guided mountain biking experiences in the Espadilla area are designed as loop routes, starting and ending at the same point, often incorporating various jungle paths, coastal views, and natural attractions. This allows for a comprehensive exploration of the area without the need for shuttle services. However, specific route details would depend on the tour operator or the particular trail network you choose to explore.

What kind of wildlife might I encounter on a no-traffic cycling route in Espadilla?

The Espadilla region is teeming with biodiversity. On a no-traffic cycling route, especially those winding through the rainforest, you have a good chance of spotting two-toed and three-toed sloths, capuchin and howler monkeys, iguanas, toucans, and a variety of other exotic birds and creatures. Maintaining a respectful distance and observing quietly will enhance your wildlife viewing experience.

Are there options for advanced cyclists looking for challenging traffic-free routes?

Yes, the Espadilla area, particularly for mountain biking, offers challenging routes suitable for advanced cyclists. Many of the available tours and trails feature significant elevation changes, technical sections through dense jungle, and varied terrain that will test experienced riders. With 11 out of 14 routes in the komoot community being rated as 'difficult', there are plenty of demanding options for those seeking a rigorous cycling adventure away from traffic.

What do other touring cyclists enjoy most about cycling in Espadilla?

The komoot community rates the cycling experiences in Espadilla highly, with an average score of 4.2 stars from 45 ratings. Reviewers often praise the immersive experience of cycling through lush rainforests, the thrill of encountering diverse wildlife, and the stunning coastal views. The opportunity to escape traffic and connect with nature on challenging, yet rewarding, trails is a frequently highlighted aspect.

Are there any specific recommendations for what to wear or bring for a no-traffic cycling tour in Espadilla?

Given the tropical climate and potential for varied terrain, it's recommended to wear lightweight, breathable, moisture-wicking clothing. Sun protection (sunscreen, hat, sunglasses) is essential. Bring plenty of water, as hydration is crucial in the heat and humidity. Insect repellent is also highly advisable for jungle sections. For mountain biking, sturdy closed-toe shoes and gloves are recommended. If you're on a guided tour, helmets and sometimes even hydration are provided.

Is it possible to find cafes or accommodation near these traffic-free cycling routes?

Espadilla and the nearby town of Quepos are popular tourist destinations, so you'll find a range of cafes, restaurants, and accommodation options. While the 'no traffic' cycling routes themselves might lead you into more secluded natural areas, most tours or trailheads are accessible from areas with amenities. It's always a good idea to plan your route or tour in advance to know where the nearest facilities are located.

What are the typical distances and durations for traffic-free cycling routes in Espadilla?

The distances and durations for traffic-free cycling routes in Espadilla can vary significantly depending on the specific trail or guided tour. For example, some routes in the komoot community range from approximately 20 km to over 100 km, with durations from a few hours to a full day. The challenging terrain and elevation changes mean that even shorter distances can take a considerable amount of time and effort. Always check the specific route details for an accurate estimate.
