On the village green stands a chestnut tree and a bench in memorial to the 16 local women, known as the Ascott Martyrs. Bruern is a hamlet on the River Evenlode on land that would have once been covered by the great, ancient forest of Wychwood. It was home to a Cistercian Abbey between 1147 and 1536. In 1720 a fine, baroque country house was built on the site of the former abbey. There are plenty of lovely walks nearby. Foxholes Nature Reserve has an excellent wildlife trail, whilst the D'Arcy Dalton Way and Oxfordshire Way both pass through the area.
