August 21, 2025, Castello dei Conti di Modica, Alcamo

Built in the 14th century by order of Enrico and Federico Chiaramonte due to its privileged location overlooking the sea, Alcamo Castle has an impregnable exterior, while its interior is elegant. It has a rhomboid layout with four towers—two square and two round—and a large internal courtyard. The castle's openings are Gothic-style mullioned windows with two and three lights. In the 19th century, the Castle of the Counts of Modica became the property of the Municipality of Alcamo. Today, it houses the Regional Wine Shop of Western Sicily. An impregnable fortress and prestigious residence of Enrico and Federico Chiaramonte, who likely built it between 1340 and 1350, the castle takes its name from the Counts who owned it from 1410 to 1812. With its sturdy structure, built on a rhomboidal plan, and four alternating towers—two cylindrical and two square—it protected the city and withstood violent attacks for centuries, including the infamous one by the Islamic pirate, Barbarossa. On the north facade, two original single-lancet windows remain, while in the internal courtyard, two double-lancet and three-lancet windows remain. The castle's grand staircase is made of red marble from the quarries of Mount Bonifato. Opposite the theater dedicated to the poet Cielo d'Alcamo, in the same square, the symbolic monument of the city of Alcamo, the Castle of the Counts of Modica, stands before the visitor. The road that leads to Calatafimi from the station is about 8 km long, the first stretch is very easy to cycle with gradients of around 3-4%, the last 2 km are more challenging with percentages that reach 7-8%

If you're cycling and want to take a short break near Scopello, the viewpoint at the Faraglioni di Scopello is the perfect place. The striking cliffs rise impressively from the sea and are surrounded by lush vegetation. Even from up here, you have a fantastic view of the imposing rock needles that characterize the Mediterranean flair of the coast. If you want to park your bike for a moment, a short descent down to the water awaits you. There, crystal-clear water and a seabed that is perfect for snorkeling await you. Especially with a mask, you can fully enjoy the colorful underwater world – a short detour that is definitely worth it. The path there runs through the garden and costs admission, but offers stunning views of the sea. But be careful, especially in summer, temperatures can be high, so don't forget to bring plenty of water and take breaks in the shade every now and then.

Adjacent to the municipal building is the Garibaldi House Museum, formerly Pampalone, an authentic treasure chest of homeland and Risorgimento history rich in documents and relics of the famous Battle of Calatafimi on 15 May 1860. Inside it is possible to visit the rooms where Garibaldi, the Hero of the Two Worlds, found shelter and refreshment in those troubled days in which the fate of the nascent Italy was decided thanks to the commitment of a thousand and more picciotti, and to which numerous patriotic citizens of Calatafimi certainly did not lack their courage and support in the undertaking. From the balcony of this building which was the home of Antonino Pampalone, parish priest and fervent liberal, Giuseppe Garibaldi spoke to the crowd gathered on 16 May 1860 after the clash with the Bourbon army.
