A must-do climb if you are in the area, beautiful views, a lovely climb of just over 3 kilometres and with a gradient of 6.1% with ramps of more than 10%. At the top is the Castle, ideal for stopping for a snack and enjoying the place, which is listed as one of the "beautiful villages of Spain".

Beautiful access to the river and a large "pebble beach" for lying down. From here you can swim into the gorge. Fantastically clear water with lots of fish. Access via the hiking trail is very easy and can be done by almost anyone. Certainly the highlight of this hiking trail.

Beautifully restored castle. We stayed at this place on our long-distance hike from Tarifa to Switzerland and we can highly recommend it.

The park is renowned for its unique landscapes. You'll hike through vast cork oak forests, the largest in the Iberian Peninsula, and discover lush 'canutos' – narrow, deep ravines with a distinctive laurisilva (laurel forest) flora, creating a 'mist forest effect'. Rivers, streams, and reservoirs also add to the diverse scenery.
Yes, there are several enjoyable circular routes perfect for families. For an easy option, consider the Montera del Torero – Valdeinfierno Gorge loop, which is just under 6 km long and takes you through a beautiful gorge. Another great choice is the La Almoraima loop, offering a moderate 8 km walk through varied terrain.
Families can explore a variety of natural and man-made attractions. You might encounter the unique 'canutos' with their semi-tropical vegetation, or enjoy views of reservoirs like the Charco Redondo Reservoir. Some trails also offer panoramic vistas from viewpoints such as the Ojén Pass Viewpoint.
Absolutely. The park is dotted with historical and cultural sites. You can find ancient castles like Castellar and Jimena perched on hilltops, offering stunning views. The View of Castellar Castle – View of Gibraltar loop is a moderate option that combines hiking with historical sightseeing. Picturesque white villages are also scattered throughout the region, providing charming stops.
The best times for family hikes are typically spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). During these seasons, the weather is milder, and the natural beauty of the park, with its lush vegetation or autumnal colors, is at its peak. Summers can be very hot, making early mornings or late afternoons preferable if visiting then.
While many trails in Los Alcornocales involve natural, uneven terrain, some of the easier, flatter sections or designated recreational areas might be suitable for sturdy strollers. For toddlers, look for the 'easy' graded routes, which tend to have less elevation gain and shorter distances. Always check individual route descriptions for specific terrain details.
Los Alcornocales is a haven for wildlife. Families can enjoy spotting various birds, especially raptors like griffon vultures and eagles, as the park is a crucial migratory bird stop. Mammals such as deer, roe deer, and wild boars are also present, though often more elusive. Keep an eye out for tracks and listen for sounds of nature.
