History, Purkersdorf The town of Purkersdorf was founded as a forest settlement around the year 1000. The name Purchartesdorf was documented as being mentioned when its owner Albero de Purchartesdorf appeared in 1133 as a witness and donor in various writings of the Klosterneuburg monastery. The castle was probably built at this time. However, it was first mentioned in 1255 in a bill of sale. It was built as a moated castle surrounded by a moat. The oldest parts of the castle, the knob towers, are still preserved today. The owners of the small forest settlement changed frequently and in 1333 the forest lordship of Purkersdorf passed into the possession of the Habsburg princes. Around 1600, around 120 people lived in around 20 houses around the castle, most of whom were subjects of the burgraves (administrators) as hunters or forest workers. As early as 1500, the Imperial Forest Office was founded in Purkersdorf, a central forest administration for the Vienna Woods. For Purkersdorf, this meant a major economic boom, also due to the jurisdiction that was exercised with the imperial forest office in the castle. Only at the end of the 17th century did the hunting forest become a commercial forest. Hüttlersiedlungen emerged and wood was taken to Vienna via the Vienna River. Favored by the traffic situation, Purkersdorf became an economic center. Located on the Reichs-Hauptpoststraße to Linz, inns were soon founded, but also a post office (first mentioned as early as 1558) and the necessary change of horses meant that the town of Purkersdorf was incorporated into the central administration even after the imperial forest office under Empress Maria Theresia , continued to grow. The Purkersdorf parish church became independent in the 13th century. She is to St. Dedicated to James the Elder and has shared many of the town's tragedies. It was repeatedly destroyed by fire. It got its current shape after being destroyed during the second Turkish attack in 1683. Towards the end of the 17th century. and at the beginning of the 18th century it developed into the Maria Purkersdorf pilgrimage church due to the plague epidemics.
