September 2025: Alta Vista mountain hut still not open. It's undergoing extensive renovations and is apparently being upgraded. A helicopter flies up and down with construction materials. The hike from the road to Montana Blanca is easy. Then, a permit check and a long, steep climb to the top. Challenging but beautiful.

National Park Teide offers over 60 hiking trails that are accessible by bus, catering to a wide range of fitness levels. These routes allow you to explore the park's unique volcanic landscapes and stunning natural features without needing a car.
Yes, there are several easy trails suitable for families. While specific 'family-friendly' bus routes aren't detailed, many shorter, less strenuous paths can be accessed from bus stops. The park features trails like the Samara Loop Trail (Senda 13), which is an easier 5 km loop through pine forest and volcanic craters, ideal for a quieter experience. Always check the specific bus stop for the trailhead.
For experienced hikers seeking a challenge, the ascent to the summit of Mount Teide is possible. The Telesforo Bravo Trail leads to the summit, but requires a permit for access. Another demanding option is the Montaña Blanca – Montaña Blanca Viewpoint loop, a difficult 18.9 km route with significant elevation gain, offering breathtaking views of the volcanic landscape.
Yes, access to the summit of Mount Teide (via the Telesforo Bravo trail) requires a permit from the National Park authorities. It is highly recommended to book this permit well in advance, as availability is limited. Other trails in the park generally do not require a permit.
The trails offer incredible views of Teide National Park's volcanic terrain. You can explore iconic rock formations like Roque Cinchado, part of the famous Roques de García, and witness the vast caldera of Las Cañadas del Teide. Many routes provide panoramic vistas of the Teide-Pico Viejo stratovolcano, craters, and lava streams. You might also encounter unique endemic flora like the Teide bugloss.
Yes, several circular routes are available. For example, the View of Mount Teide – Cañada de la Camilleta loop is a moderate 13.5 km circular hike. Another option is the Roque Cinchado – Roque Blanco loop, a moderate 8.2 km route that allows you to return to your starting point, often near a bus stop.
The park is generally accessible year-round, but spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) offer pleasant temperatures and fewer crowds. In winter, higher elevations can experience snow and ice, requiring appropriate gear. Summer can be very hot, so early morning starts are advisable. Always check weather conditions before heading out, especially if relying on bus schedules.
The area is highly rated by the komoot community, with an average score of 4.4 stars. Reviewers often praise the otherworldly volcanic landscapes, the stunning panoramic views, and the well-maintained trails that allow for immersive exploration of this unique UNESCO World Heritage Site. The accessibility by bus is also frequently highlighted as a major convenience.
Many bus stops are strategically located near viewpoints. The Roques de García area, for instance, is a popular bus stop and offers immediate access to trails around the iconic rock formations and stunning views of Mount Teide. The Mirador del Llano de Ucanca also provides excellent views of the highest volcanoes and the Roques de García, often accessible via nearby bus routes.
Due to the varying altitudes and weather conditions, it's best to dress in layers. Even on sunny days, temperatures can drop significantly, especially at higher elevations or when the sun sets. Bring sturdy hiking boots, sun protection (hat, sunglasses, high SPF sunscreen), and plenty of water. A windproof and waterproof jacket is also recommended, as conditions can change rapidly.
Yes, the El Portillo Visitors' Centre is a key hub within the park and is accessible by bus. It features a botanical garden and provides information about the park. While not every bus stop will have a cafe directly adjacent, major points like El Portillo or the Teide Cable Car base station offer facilities, including restrooms and sometimes small shops or eateries. It's always wise to bring your own snacks and sufficient water.
