July 6, 2026, Cala Gonone

The village of Cala Gonone is located in the middle of the east coast of Sardinia on the Golfo di Orosei. The district belongs to the municipality of Dorgali. The former fishing village has since become a pure holiday resort, a bathing resort with a beach and caves. However, as is the case almost everywhere in Sardinia, there are only a few tall houses.

The Monti del Gennargentu form the highest mountain range in Sardinia and the "roof of the island". It is located in the heart of Barbagia. The rugged, rocky mountain world is home to Punta La Marmora (1,834 m), the highest peak in Sardinia, as well as historical Nuragic villages, and offers fantastic hiking opportunities.

The trail to the Gorropu Gorge isn't for flip-flops or half-heartedness—but if you stick with it, you'll be rewarded with one of Sardinia's most impressive natural wonders! The descent (and especially the return climb) from the upper parking lot is quite challenging: rocky, steep, and sunny—a real calf-tester. Those out on hot days should seriously consider taking the more leisurely route through the valley instead. Down in the valley, before entering the actual gorge, there's a Sardinian flag with spring water to refill your water bottle ;)

At 1,834 meters, Punta La Marmora is the highest peak in the whole of Sardinia. It is located in the Gennargentu massif, between the municipalities of Arzana and Desulo, and is named after the general and scientist Alberto Ferrero della Marmora, who described the Sardinian island in two scientific-literary works.
