Il castello è abbarbicato su un aspro sperone di roccia, da cui domina la piana dell’Alto Garda. Dell’antica fortezza sono rimaste intatte le torri, parte delle mura di cinta e alcuni edifici in rovina, che subirono nel corso dei secoli numerosi assalti. L’ultimo, fu quello delle truppe francesi nell'agosto del 1703, mentre si combatteva la guerra di successione al trono di Spagna. All’interno del castello di Arco, grazie ad un recente restauro, si possono visitare la Prigione del Sasso e la Torre Grande, le cui pareti sono decorato con uno splendido ciclo di affreschi profani del Trecento che raffigurano dame intente a giocare a scacchi.
