...and all of a sudden you're in the Netherlands... My route to Maastricht turned right just before the border. Didn't pay attention for a moment, and I had already crossed the border. Nice that such "borders" exist...

A symbol for meeting and connection. Artwork Under the blue Sky Tree - March 2021 In honor of the redevelopment of Amerikaplein, this artwork was placed: a tree and chairs formed from leaves, each unique like the people who sit on them. The poetic artwork "Under the blue Sky Tree" in Margraten bears a text that refers to the merger of Eijsden and Margraten, written in the handwriting of the artist Rob van Avesaath's father. The text by Rouke van der Hoek depicts a new beginning and rooting in the new place. ◘ From the Maas I come over the plateau and now land here as a human being who starts anew, my outline with blossom, leaf and the desire to root under you. It describes a powerful image of starting over (as a human), anchoring (rooting) and growth (blossom, leaf), after a journey over the 'plateau'. In his father's handwriting, the artist incorporated a poem by Rouke van der Hoek into the crown of the tree. This artwork was made by Rob van Avesaath. https://www.robvanavesaath.nl/

It's a miracle that the Berkelpoort and Grendelpoort gates were spared during the destruction of Valkenburg Castle. The Berkelpoort was built around 1335 and was part of the city's medieval defenses. At that time, the gate also had a drawbridge over the moat. The Berkelpoort was primarily used by travelers heading towards Oud-Valkenburg, Schin op Geul, and Aachen. The gate was thoroughly renovated in 2007-2008. The two large marlstone towers that make up the gate are now connected by a wooden footbridge. Source: Visit Zuid Limburg.

The Berkelpoort is one of Valkenburg's historic city gates and is an important remnant of the medieval fortifications. Built of marlstone and featuring sturdy arches, the gate bears witness to the strategic defenses that once protected the city. Walking through or past the Berkelpoort, you'll feel history come to life, while the surrounding streets and Valkenburg's characteristic cityscape provide an atmospheric context.

From this vantage point, you have a magnificent view of the ruins of Valkenburg Castle, towering high above the town. The remains of the medieval castle form a striking silhouette against the rolling Limburg landscape. Especially in the soft evening light, the place exudes history and atmosphere.
