The church is first mentioned in a deed of donation from around 1150. The noble Lord Mirabilis donated the lands around Schwarmstedt to the diocese of Minden and a solid church could be built, which was the ecclesiastical center of the former Amtsvogtei Essel. The external shape of the church that still exists today, a three-nave hall church in the late Gothic style, was built as a new building in 1510. The church tower in the west, in which two church bells hang, is still of Romanesque origin. The church furnishings include a late Gothic carved altar, the shrine of which has a statue of a crescent moon Madonna under a canopy.
