Unexpectedly and hidden, a figure with facial contours was carved from a tree, which had been weathering there for years.

Since I was on my bike, I was looking forward to a break with a good coffee and a slice of homemade cake. Instead, I found myself in an East Frisian farm shop, which you can only enter with an EC card – very trustworthy. Inside, everything is self-service: coffee from a machine in a paper cup and plenty of "regional" products, which seem to come from generous purchases rather than from home-grown production. Payment, of course, is completely contactless – in the truest sense of the word. So I decided to just keep cycling.

The path behind it has now become quite overgrown; it is still passable, but not as easy to walk on as it used to be.

The Ewiges Meer region offers a fantastic selection of family-friendly hiking trails. You'll find over 300 routes suitable for various ages and abilities, with nearly 200 of them rated as easy, perfect for a relaxed family outing.
The main attraction is undoubtedly the Ewiges Meer itself, Germany's largest raised bog lake. Families will particularly enjoy the 1.8-kilometer boardwalk (Bohlenweg) on its northern edge, which allows close-up views of the unique moor landscape without disturbing it. There's also a moor educational trail with information boards to learn about the local flora and fauna.
Absolutely! For a gentle and short circular walk, consider the route starting from Café Zum Ewigen Meer – Ewiges Meer Parking Area loop from Eversmeer. It's just under 1.6 kilometers long with minimal elevation, making it ideal for families with small children or those looking for a very relaxed stroll.
Ewiges Meer offers beauty year-round. In June, you can see the glowing cotton grass, while August brings the rosy shimmer of heather blossoms. Even winter offers a romantic solitude under a full moon. However, for comfortable family hiking, late spring through early autumn (May to October) generally provides the most pleasant weather and best conditions for exploring the moor.
Many trails in the region are dog-friendly, but it's crucial to keep dogs on a leash, especially within the nature reserve areas. This protects the sensitive ecosystem and local wildlife, including rare bird species. Always check local signage for specific restrictions.
There are designated parking areas available near the main attractions. For example, the Ewiges Meer Parking Area is a common starting point for several routes, including longer loops and access to the boardwalk.
While the boardwalk (Bohlenweg) is generally accessible, the natural terrain of a high moor can be uneven. For stroller-friendly options, look for wider, well-maintained paths. The moor educational trail sections are often suitable, but some of the more natural, unpaved paths might be challenging for standard strollers. Always assess the path conditions before heading out.
The protected nature reserve is home to specialized and rare flora and fauna. Keep an eye out for unique plant species like diverse peat mosses, cotton grass, and the rare sundew. It's also an important area for birdlife, including the Black Tern, cranes, and various water birds. Amphibians like the moor frog and reptiles such as the sand lizard and adder also inhabit the reserve.
Yes, for families seeking a longer adventure, the Rannenmattweg Trail Junction – Eversmeer Moor Area loop from Eversmeer offers a moderate hike of about 9.5 kilometers. This route provides a good balance of distance and immersion in the moor landscape, suitable for older children who enjoy a bit more challenge.
The area is highly rated by the komoot community, with an average score of 4.47 stars. Reviewers often praise the unique, tranquil moor landscape, the well-maintained boardwalk, and the opportunity to experience such a special natural environment. Many appreciate the educational aspects of the moor trail and the sense of peace found here.
Yes, there are options for refreshments. You'll find Café Zum Ewigen Meer near the lake, which is a convenient spot for a break. Additionally, many families choose to pack a picnic to enjoy amidst the beautiful natural surroundings, with several spots offering benches or open areas suitable for a stop.
