Windmills in nature, you may have an opinion about them, but they have to be somewhere.

In the middle of the village of Hekelingen stands the Dorpskerk, built around 1850. The place of worship is still in use. The first concrete news about the Hekelingse Dorpskerk dates from the 17th century, when it was a dilapidated church. The current form of the church dates from 1850. The Hekelingse Dorpskerk is a hall church and has a neoclassical shape. The internal square tower has an octagonal spire. The church was restored in 1962-1963. The bell from the first church of Hekelingen dates from 1285 and is the oldest signed bell in the Netherlands. This bell has been in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam since 1916. Church towers were used in the past as signal posts in case of trouble. This also applies to the tower of the Dorpskerk in Hekelingen.

With a few hundred inhabitants, Simonshaven is the smallest village in Voorne-Putten. It owes its origins to the diking of the polders of Putten around a harbor on the Bernisse. Simonshaven has been part of the municipality of Bernisse since 1980. Due to the embankment, most of the land is only suitable for grassland. There is a single orchard, but the sandy soil is not suitable for arable farming. The development of Simonshaven stagnated when the Bernisse silted up in the 16th century. The Bernisse flows into the Spui at Simonshaven. Due to the many floods in earlier times, the church was built on a traffic island. The characteristic white church of Simonshaven is still located outside the village.

Lovely area to walk the dog. Partly asphalt but many unpaved paths. No mountain bikers and hardly any cyclists. Otherwise quiet.
