The area between Schiedam and Vlaardingen just north of the Benelux tunnel on both sides of the A4 is called Vijfsluizen. The area has a long history. In order to improve the drainage of the peat meadow area of Midden Delfland, the Poldervaart was dug from Vrijeban (near Delft) to Schiedam, which was completed in 1280. At that time, drainage into the Maas was done with tidal locks, sluices, which could only drain if the water in the Nieuwe Maas was lower than in the bosom. There were five of these tidal locks at that time. The first was at the Vlaardingerdijk, the last at the Schie. In between, including near Kethel, were the other three locks in the Poldervaart. The name 'Vijfsluizen' is derived from this. Source: Wikipedia
