TOMB OF THE HORAZI AND CURIAZI The so-called Tomb of the Horatii and Curiazi, located in Albano Laziale on the right side of the Via Appia Antica (15th mile), is an imposing funerary monument from the late Republican era (1st century BC). Characterized by a square peperino base with conical turrets, it recalls ancient Etruscan urns and underwent major restoration by Valadier in the 19th century. Dating and Interpretation: Built in the first half of the 1st century BC, the monument is linked only by legendary tradition to the challenge of the Horatii and Curiazi (7th century BC). Modern studies suggest that it is the tomb of an illustrious figure, perhaps related to the Arruntia family or, due to its structural similarity, a tribute to the tomb of Porsenna described by Pliny. The collegiate church of Santa Maria Assunta in Cielo (in Latin: Ecclesia collegiata Beatae Mariae Virginis Dei Matris in Coelum Assumptae[1]) is the main Catholic place of worship in the municipality of Ariccia, in the Castelli Romani area, in the metropolitan city of Rome Capital and suburban seat of Albano. A collegiate church with this name existed in Ariccia since the 6th century,[2] but the current building with the main facade on the monumental Piazza di Corte was built between 1663 and 1665 thanks to the interest of the Chigi family and designed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini, [3] with the contribution of other important artists active in Rome in the seventeenth century. The church, included among the registered monumental assets of the province of Rome,[4] is today the main parish seat of the municipality, united with the parish of the sanctuary of Santa Maria di Galloro.
