On the forest road Route Forestière du Chaume lies the Refuge des Places shelter with a drinking water fountain. The asphalted forest road leads up to the Grand Ventron and is accessible via the departmental road D43 as a spur road at the hairpin bend shortly before the entrance to Ventron, as Chemin des Places. The hut is located in a forest clearing, from where you can ascend to the Grand Ventron via the old route, the Ancienne Route de la Chaume, and via the new route, the Nouvelle Route de la Chaume du Grand Ventron. The old route is very steep and not continuously asphalted and rather suitable for gravel or mountain bikes, while the new route with its rough asphalt is still suitable for road bikes.
