District Office - the building of the former "Monopol" hotel The Monopol Hotel stood in the western corner of the market square. Built in the years 1910-14, it fitted into the silhouette of the 700-year-old historic city. After occupying the city on March 3, 1945, the Russians set fire to the entire historic downtown, which was filled with buildings erected from the 18th to the first half of the 20th century. The hotel was designated as a field hospital and this function saved the building from destruction. The destroyed city was not rebuilt, and the surviving building today houses the District Office. Renovated in recent years, it stands out against the background of the apartment blocks that accompany it and is the most beautiful building in the city.
