This trail is wonderful! After an initial uphill stretch through the woods, you'll find yourself walking through a truly evocative landscape until you reach the Valle del Bove.

Even in bad weather or under dark clouds, the trip up is worthwhile. The cable car takes you up to 1,900 meters. By the time we reached the top, the clouds had almost disappeared due to the wind.

What is crazy is that the ground is still warm to hot 23 years after the eruption in 2001.

Parco dell'Etna offers a wide variety of trails suitable for families. Our guide features over 200 routes, with 70 classified as easy and 95 as moderate, ensuring there are plenty of options for all ages and skill levels.
The landscapes are incredibly diverse, ranging from barren, lunar-like expanses at higher elevations to lush forests and cultivated lands on the lower slopes. You'll encounter unique volcanic formations like craters and solidified lava flows, as well as distinct vegetation belts, from vineyards to beech forests. It's a truly dynamic environment that changes with every turn.
Yes, there are several excellent circular routes perfect for families. A popular choice is the Path of the Craters of the 2002 eruption – loop in the Etna Park, which allows you to explore recent volcanic activity. Another great option is the Crateri Silvestri from Rifugio Sapienza – loop in the Parco dell'Etna, offering accessible views of these iconic craters.
Many family-friendly trails offer stunning views and unique natural features. You can explore craters formed during past eruptions, such as those near the Silvestri Inferior Craters. The Panorama of the Valle del Bove and Schiena dell'Asino route provides expansive views of the massive Valle del Bove volcanic depression. Some trails also lead to scenic spots like the Acqua Rocca Waterfall.
Absolutely! Parco dell'Etna is home to over 200 lava caves. You might find trails leading near fascinating spots like the Serracozzo Cave or the Case del Vescovo Caves. For resting or refreshments, several huts are accessible, such as Sapienza Hut or Piccolo Rifugio (Etna South).
The park offers unique experiences year-round. Spring and autumn generally provide the most pleasant temperatures for hiking, with vibrant flora in spring and beautiful colors in autumn. Summer can be warm, but higher elevations offer cooler air. Winter brings snow, transforming the landscape into a stunning white wonderland, though some trails may require specific gear or be inaccessible.
While many trails involve uneven volcanic terrain, some areas offer easier paths. The Monti Sartorius Nature Trail is known for being relatively easy and winding through volcanic cones. For specific stroller accessibility, it's best to check individual route descriptions, as conditions can vary.
Given the varied terrain and potential for changing weather, it's wise to pack layers of clothing, sturdy hiking shoes, sun protection (hat, sunscreen), and plenty of water. Snacks are essential, especially for children. A small first-aid kit and a map or GPS device are also recommended. For higher elevations, even in summer, a light jacket can be useful.
While some areas are accessible by public transport, particularly the Rifugio Sapienza area via bus from Catania, many trailheads require private vehicle access. It's advisable to check specific routes for public transport options or consider driving to ensure flexibility, especially when hiking with a family.
The area is highly rated by the komoot community, with an average score of 4.5 stars. Reviewers often praise the unique volcanic landscapes, the sense of adventure, and the diverse natural beauty. Many highlight the well-marked paths and the opportunity to experience Europe's most active volcano up close, even on family-friendly routes.
Parco dell'Etna is generally dog-friendly, but regulations can vary depending on the specific area or protected zone. It's always best to keep your dog on a leash and ensure you clean up after them. For certain sensitive ecological areas or higher elevations, there might be restrictions, so checking local signage or park information before your visit is recommended.
