The tree is several meters wide due to its enormous plank roots on the ground and a group of several people can comfortably fit in front of it. An impressive photo opportunity.

From this position, the rock formations look like the profile of the former US president. His hairline, nose and chin are clearly visible.

The waterfall is in two parts. One part falls next to the other into the river. The best view is from the opposite bank. A few steps away there is a kind of covered wooden perch that is suitable as a place to take a break.

Here is the entrance to the national park. Buses end here, parking lot for cars is nearby, registration and SSL reception are here. Opposite a viewing platform, so you have a nice view of the area. You often don't see Mount Kinabalu, which is discreetly shrouded in fog.

Railings are missing, but otherwise the stairs still look quite sturdy to cut the bend in the road. Unfortunately, it ends in nowhere, so you have to go back. But if you still want to go up in altitude, you are welcome to run up and down here

Yes, the Crocker Range offers several easy trails perfect for families. For a gentle walk, consider the Octomeles Sumatrana Tree – Deer Cave loop from Mulu Airport, which is just over 6 km with minimal elevation gain. Another easy option is the Hiking loop from Mulu Airport, a shorter 3.5 km route.
The Crocker Range is a biodiversity hotspot. Along the trails, you might encounter diverse forest types, from lowland to montane, and potentially spot unique Bornean flora and fauna. Notable natural features include deep river valleys and jungle waterfalls. For specific highlights, you could explore areas near Paku Waterfall or the Giant Tree in Gunung Mulu National Park.
Absolutely! Many of the family-friendly routes in the Crocker Range are designed as loops. For example, the Paku Waterfall – Tree Top Tower loop from Mulu offers a moderate circular hike, allowing you to experience different scenery without retracing your steps.
The Crocker Range experiences high rainfall year-round, contributing to its lush environment. While hiking is possible throughout the year, the dry season (typically March to September) might offer slightly more comfortable conditions with less rain, though showers can occur at any time. Always be prepared for wet weather.
The area is highly rated by the komoot community, with an average score of 4.8 stars. Reviewers often praise the immersive experience in untouched nature, the rich biodiversity, and the chance to explore unique Bornean landscapes away from more crowded destinations.
The Crocker Range National Park is a protected area known for its rich biodiversity. Generally, national parks in Malaysia have strict regulations regarding pets to protect wildlife and natural habitats. It is highly recommended to check with the park authorities directly regarding their current pet policy before planning your visit with a dog.
As a UNESCO-listed Biosphere Reserve and National Park, permits and entrance fees are typically required for access to certain areas and trails within the Crocker Range. It's advisable to check the official Sabah Parks website or contact the park headquarters in advance for the most up-to-date information on permit requirements and fees.
Parking availability can vary depending on the specific trailhead. For trails originating near established visitor centers or attractions like Mulu Airport (as seen in routes like the Paku Waterfall – Tree Top Tower loop from Mulu Airport), you are more likely to find designated parking areas. For more remote trailheads, parking might be limited or require local guidance. Always plan your transport and parking in advance.
Facilities such as restrooms and cafes are generally available at major entry points or visitor centers within the Crocker Range National Park, or near popular attractions. However, along the trails themselves, amenities can be sparse. It's always best to carry enough water and snacks, and use facilities before starting your hike.
Given the high rainfall and tropical environment, light, breathable, and quick-drying clothing is recommended. Sturdy, comfortable hiking shoes are essential. Always pack rain gear (a lightweight jacket or poncho), insect repellent, sunscreen, a hat, and plenty of water. A first-aid kit and snacks are also advisable, especially when hiking with children.
The Crocker Range is renowned for its exceptional biodiversity. Keep an eye out for unique plant species, including endemic Rafflesia flowers (though sightings are rare and seasonal) and various wild orchids and pitcher plants. While spotting larger mammals like orangutans or sun bears is uncommon on general family trails, you might encounter a variety of birds, insects, and smaller reptiles or amphibians. The region is a birdwatcher's paradise with over 250 recorded species.
