Go to the k.k. priv. Kaiser Ferdinands-Nordbahn and the k.k. Northern State Railway dating back to 1838 and 1849. After Vienna and Budapest, Brno was the third major city of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy and the first in the Czech lands to have a railway connection, in this case to the Emperor Ferdinand's Northern Railway. It led from Vienna via Lundenburg to Brno and in the other branch from Lundenburg to Kraków and Bochnia. The first station in Brno was laid out as a terminus in 1838 in front of the "Ferdinandsthore", which was only newly built in 1835.

Býčí skála together with Rudický propadání forms the second longest cave system in the Czech Republic. The total length of the whole system exceeds 15 km. The entrance to the cave is located in the valley of the Křtinský brook. The cave has been used since ancient times. Remains of a settlement from the Paleolithic period were found here. From the Iron Age, many objects were found here, as well as the Hallstatt burial ground with more than 40 skeletons. In 1869, a bronze statuette of a bull was found, after which the cave got its name. Admission: occasional

What kind of terrain can I expect on traffic-free road cycling routes in the Southeast?

The Southeast offers diverse terrain for traffic-free road cycling. You'll find everything from the challenging climbs and stunning vistas of the Appalachian Mountains, including sections of the Blue Ridge Parkway and Great Smoky Mountains, to the gentle, rolling hills of the Piedmont and the flat, scenic coastal paths. Routes like the Natchez Trace Parkway offer hundreds of miles of peaceful, commercial-vehicle-free riding through varied landscapes.

Are there any beginner-friendly traffic-free road cycling routes in the Southeast?

Yes, the Southeast has several beginner-friendly options. Many multi-use trails, like the Silver Comet Trail in Georgia or the Fred Marquis Pinellas Trail in Florida, offer smooth, paved surfaces with minimal elevation changes, perfect for those new to road cycling or looking for a relaxed ride. These trails often follow old railway lines, ensuring a gentle gradient.

Where can I find challenging traffic-free road cycling routes in the Southeast?

For more advanced cyclists seeking a challenge, the mountainous regions are ideal. The Blue Ridge Parkway in North Carolina and Virginia, or routes within the Great Smoky Mountains National Park like the Heintooga Ridge, offer significant elevation gains and rewarding descents. The Cherohala Skyway, straddling North Carolina and Tennessee, is also praised for its scenic and demanding sections.

What is the best time of year to go road cycling in the Southeast?

The mild climate of the Southeast makes year-round cycling feasible in many areas. However, spring and fall are particularly popular. Autumn offers stunning foliage, especially in the mountainous regions like the Blue Ridge Mountains, while spring brings pleasant temperatures and blooming landscapes. Summers can be hot and humid, especially in coastal and lowland areas, so early morning rides are recommended.

Are there any family-friendly traffic-free road cycling routes in the Southeast?

Absolutely. Many of the region's multi-use trails are perfect for families, offering safe, car-free environments. Trails like the Silver Comet Trail and the Fred Marquis Pinellas Trail are known for their flat, paved surfaces and amenities, making them suitable for cyclists of all ages and skill levels. Always check specific trail details for amenities like restrooms and picnic areas.

Can I bring my dog on traffic-free road cycling routes in the Southeast?

Many traffic-free multi-use trails in the Southeast are dog-friendly, provided your dog is on a leash and you follow local regulations regarding pet waste. What amenities like cafes or pubs can I find along traffic-free routes?

While many traffic-free routes prioritize natural scenery, some pass through or near towns and communities where you can find cafes, pubs, and other services. Trails that connect urban areas, such as the American Tobacco Trail in North Carolina, often have amenities accessible nearby. For more remote routes, it's advisable to carry sufficient water and snacks.

Is public transport available to access traffic-free road cycling routes in the Southeast?

In larger metropolitan areas, some multi-use trails might be accessible by local bus or train services that accommodate bicycles.
