The Vleeshal is a historic building on the Grote Markt in Haarlem, which currently houses the Hal location of the Frans Hals Museum. The Meat Hall is a magnificent example of the Northern Renaissance, with Renaissance ornaments applied to a Gothic floor plan (plan and elevation). Renaissance forms include pilasters, rustication, Tuscan columns (inside), volute ornaments (above the cellar entrances), and obelisks. Inspiration for this came from model drawings by the Antwerp artist Hans Vredeman de Vries. Bull and ram heads on the facades still recall the original function of the building. The hall is characterized by a so-called volute facade.

I just enjoyed popping up and down the cobbled lane, lined with a terraces of brick homes with pointed façades. Old paintings, including by the eponymous artist, in the museum collection, if you like.

The statue of the fearless dock worker expresses the courageous act of the men and women who went on strike. In 1951, artist Mari Andriessen asked the Haarlem carpenter and contractor Willem Termetz to pose for his statue. Termetz and Andriessen were probably in the resistance together. Termetz's heavy, supple physique probably had the appearance that Andriessen wanted for his statue. Source: https://www.4en5mei.nl/oorlogsmonumenten/zoeken/1434/amsterdam-de-dokwerker
