... the "bell tower" of the "Holy Cross Cathedral" in Schwäbisch Gmünd, Baden-Württemberg. - Gmünd Minster has no bell tower - During the construction of Gmünd Minster from 1351 to 1521, the two old Romanesque bell towers collapsed in 1497 (fortunately, without injuring anyone) - After the towers collapsed, there were no plans to build a new bell tower (among other reasons, for cost reasons) - The current "bell tower" was used as a "home" for the fallen bells - Since the bells were installed, the Romanesque building from 1228 has served as a so-called "campanile," i.e., a freestanding bell tower next to the main church building without any structural connection - The bell tower was renovated from 2007 to 2009 - The bell tower houses four bells (Our Lady's Bell, Mary's Bell, and two other bells)

... the "Holy Cross Cathedral" in Schwäbisch Gmünd, Baden-Württemberg. - It is the oldest Gothic hall church in southern Germany - Height of the cathedral with turret: 51 m in total, length: 78 m in total, width: 24 m or 28 m (with choir) - Construction period from 1351 to 1521; a Romanesque church had previously stood here - The collapse of the two Romanesque towers in 1497 was dramatic (fortunately, no one was injured) - Built of Stubensandstein (sandstone), hence the extensive renovation work currently underway - Renovations from 1975 to 2009 and ongoing further renovations since 2020 (renovation planned until 2030) My highlights of the church: Interior: 1. The very beautiful stained glass windows with stunning colors and motifs - some of the windows date back to 1506 or were completely renovated in the 19th century. The most recent window dates from 2024 - the "Pentecost Window" in the pulpit area, proclaiming the grace of God. 2. The vault with its 22 columns. 3. The various altars, e.g., the "Sebald Altar" (1510). Exterior: 1. The numerous and varied gargoyles on the exterior façade. 2. The choir portals with their beautiful tympanums. - a visit is worthwhile!
