The Mennsdorf church is not surrounded by a village cemetery, as is usually the case. It is said that heavy rainfall in the middle of the 19th century caused the small village stream, the Paitzdorfer Sprotte, to swell to such an extent that it flooded and swept away half the village. Since the church and a few surrounding farms are very low-lying, the flood rose so high that even the cattle in the stables could barely keep themselves above water. The cemetery was washed away after this disaster. With foresight, the Mennsdorf citizens created the new churchyard on the western edge of the village.

The single-nave church was built at the highest point of the village, which was founded by German farmers in the second half of the 12th century. The choir tower dates from the late Gothic period. Before the Reformation, the church was the patron church of the Cronschwitz monastery and one of the largest and most important churches in the area. In 1793, the church tower received its top floor and the dome. The three bells in the tower did not arrive in Paitzdorf until 1969. They were cast by the Schilling family of bell founders in Apolda - originally for the church in Culmitzsch. As this village had to make way for uranium mining, the church in Paitzdorf got its bells.
