You are here in the Weserbergland, strictly speaking between the two elevations Schmautberg and Echternberg. The landscape of the Weserbergland was formed during the last ice ages. One finds here mainly shell limestone formations. However, you can find something special here. So these are not fossilized shells or the limestone. Here you can discover the petrified remains of animals long gone. Belemnites - what is that? Today, these animals would most likely be compared to squids, but these 10 tentacles had hooks instead of suction cups. They probably evolved like the Ammonites from the Bactrites. It is assumed that belemnites lived in swarms and in the coastal areas of the seas close to the water surface. It's been around 358-66 million years since they were found in the seas. The petrified remains that we can still find today, the rostra, are skeletal elements. These are also known by other names: thunderbolts, devil's fingers or lynx stone.
