We did have to wait in line for a good half hour, but the ice cream is simply delicious. A scoop now costs €2. Steep. But the quality is very high.

The Ösel is a 156-meter-high hill southeast of Wolfenbüttel in Lower Saxony, also referred to as the Öselberg on maps. The Ösel is located five kilometers southeast of the core city of Wolfenbüttel in the Neindorf area, which is part of the municipality of Denkte. There are two hill ranges in the surrounding area. The Asse lies about three kilometers to the northeast, and the Oderwald forest about four kilometers to the west on the other bank of the Oker River. The hill, which rises about 70 meters above the surrounding landscape and has been designated a landscape conservation area since 1966, is covered with extensive grasslands for almost two kilometers in length and one in width. This nutrient-poor grassland, created by intensive sheep farming, represents a historic landscape that was once characteristic of large parts of the East Brunswick Hills. A sparse tree population covers only the eastern slope, while shrubs and bushes fill the edges and depressions of the numerous former limestone quarries. In some areas, very old cherry trees can be found. (Source: Wikipedia)

The approximately two-hectare city moat is located in the heart of Wolfenbüttel. The body of water, which is the size of two large football stadiums, is used for a variety of purposes, which, however, also results in a lack of suitable refuges for rare (aquatic) animals and plants. And: Feeding waterfowl, as well as branches falling into the city moat, results in too many nutrients in the water. This has a negative impact on water quality and aquatic organisms, says Udo Berger, chairman of the angling club. The club has now implemented a joint project with the city of Wolfenbüttel to counteract these disadvantages for the local flora and fauna. For years, the angling club has been working to maintain and preserve native fish stocks in Wolfenbüttel's city moat. A few days ago, the club created two more floating islands in the city moat. One island was already installed last year. The historic building on the edge of Wolfenbüttel's city moat has been up for sale since the end of 2023. But finding a new owner doesn't seem to be quite so easy—the price has even been reduced.

The approximately two-hectare city moat is located in the heart of the city of Wolfenbüttel. As a central park body of water, the pond provides a valuable recreational space for various user groups. However, the diverse use of the water body also results in a lack of suitable refuges for rarer (aquatic) animals and plants, and the nutrient load in the water body is constantly increasing due to uncontrolled feeding of waterfowl, which has a negative impact on water quality and aquatic organisms (such as fish and aquatic insects). The installation of the floating islands is intended to promote biodiversity – across all species groups – in this heavily used park body of water by providing suitable habitats and refuges.
