Duderstadt has a very beautiful old town center

Originally built as a city gate, the Westerturm, along with its watchtowers, rampart, and wall, is part of the town's sophisticated medieval fortification system. The lovingly restored town wall with its battlements and towers provides a vivid impression of bygone days. No matter from which direction you approach Duderstadt, your gaze is always captivated by the tower with its spire, whose elegant left-hand twist is striking. There are quite a number of twisted towers in German-speaking areas, but none whose twist exhibits such harmonious lines as Duderstadt's Westerturm. Directly in front of the city wall lies the Stadtpark. Together with the ramparts, where lime trees and chestnut trees up to 300 years old grow, and the Bürgergärten (citizens' gardens), it forms a green ring around the old town. The idyllic Obertorteich, once also part of the sophisticated defensive systems, belongs to this as well. A footpath on the ramparts repeatedly offers beautiful views of the old town's houses.

The Kirschwiese was established around 1955 by the Haase family. Aloys Haase (born 1919) planted the trees himself and grafted them independently, as nurseries were hardly used at the time. He was an experienced nature lover with special knowledge in fruit cultivation. In 1995, Godehard Haase Jr. took over the plantation; in 1999, Godehard Haase Sr. passed away. Cherry trees can live up to 100 years and grow to about 20 meters high. Previously, there were 400 to 600 cherry varieties in Germany, with Witzenhausen being an important center for cherry cultivation. A variety determination by the expert Annette Braun-Lüllemann revealed that the Hedelfinger and Schneiders Späte Knorpelkirsche varieties, as well as Braunauer and Fromms Herzkirsche, are predominantly found. A special feature is the rare Bernsteinkirsche (amber cherry), from which scions were obtained for preservation.

On the occasion of a federal meeting of the Federation of Eichsfeld Associations, on June 17, 1964, the eleventh anniversary of the popular uprising of June 17, 1953 in the GDR, a boulder with the inscription "Eichsfeld divided / never" was unveiled in Duderstadt. In 1994, the memorial stone was relocated and the inscription changed. It now reads "Eichsfeld / indivisible". In addition, separated by barbed wire on the stone, are the two city names Duderstadt and Worbis/Heiligenstadt.

The grounds are beautifully spacious; when we arrived, the pigs were being watered and were wallowing happily in the mud. Many other animals can be encountered while wandering around the grounds: colorful peacocks, geese, ducks, chickens, roosters, fallow deer, donkeys, rabbits, goats, and the Harz Red Mountain Cattle. There is a display stable, but it was mostly empty, as the cows were in the paddock.
