St. Mary's Church forms the center of Burkau and can be seen from afar. Burkau was first mentioned in a document in 1164. A 1312 document mentions a clergyman named Heinrich, who was pastor in Burkau in 1290. The church was dedicated to the Virgin Mary. In 1517, part of Burkau, including the church fief, was sold to the St. Marienstern Monastery under Abbess Elisabeth von Teuritz, which has had a say over the church ever since. In 1575, Wolf von Ponickau of Elstra, who purchased the Burkau estate in 1556, had a stone bell tower built. During the reign of Pastor Althanns, who served from 1721 to 1758, the church was renovated so thoroughly that only a small section of the walls around the altar remained standing. Gottlob Ernst von Staupitz is to thank for the fact that the renovation, which had been decided upon in 1725, was initiated. Construction stalled, and in 1731 the church was still partially unfinished. In 1897/98, a reconstruction took place under the direction of building inspector Quentin. Author Region West Lusatia
