The Niegripp lock was opened in 1938 and replaced the Old Niegripp lock from 1872, located a little further north. The lock connects the Elbe river with the Mittelland Canal and the Elbe-Havel Canal. A special feature is that, depending on the water level of the Elbe, the passage through the lock occurs upwards or downwards in different directions.

A real eye-catcher. The Kalimandscharo, with its 120-meter-high mound, is noticeable even from a great distance. It can even be visited and climbed.

Climb the highest peak between Magdeburg and the Baltic Sea During this mountain hike, you'll cover a roughly 6 km long trail with gradients of up to 16%. It takes two to three hours and is led by expert mountain guides from the Zielitz Miners' Association. During the tour, the mountain guides will provide information about local mining – from the raw salt extracted underground to the finished product – and scenic attractions. After the approximately 3 km climb, you'll reach the summit plateau. From here, you'll enjoy impressive views of the surrounding villages, Europe's largest waterway junction, and the largest continuous linden forest. With a bit of luck, the weather will be clear, so the view even extends as far as the Brocken (Harz) Mountains. No registration is required.

The rectangular tower was built around 1300. The round tower and central section were built around 1450 and flank a pointed-arch passageway. The round tower features a projecting battlement. The more elaborate design of the round tower, the central section, and the top of the rectangular structure corresponds to the construction period around 1450 and was probably initiated by Stephan Buxtehude, to whom the Uenglinger Gate in Stendal and the Elbe Gate in Werben are attributed. The round tower is decorated with glazed bricks arranged in spiral or zigzag patterns, a molded stone frieze depicting the head of Medusa, and varied blind decorations. The plaster blinds above the gate passage bear coats of arms painted in 1897: Prussian Eagle, Imperial Eagle with the applied Hohenzollern Shield, Tangermünde Eagle, Eagle of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation, Brandenburg Eagle.
