The Salzwedel town center captivates with its exceptionally well-preserved medieval flair. The historic old town of the Hanseatic city of Salzwedel is a North German gem, known above all for its well-preserved, magnificent half-timbered houses, its imposing brick Gothic architecture, and the remains of the medieval city fortifications. As Salzwedel was largely spared from heavy destruction in World War II, you can stroll through authentic, centuries-old alleys here.

A small but particularly worthwhile stopover on the Altmark Cycle Route is the village church of Eickhorst near Dähre. The late Gothic fieldstone church dates from the 15th century and impresses with its simple, original character. The planked bell tower, whose wood was dendrochronologically dated to around 1515, is particularly striking.

The Steintor in the Hanseatic city of Salzwedel is the most recent of the formerly ten medieval city gates. It was built around 1530, incorporating an older round tower that formerly served as a prison. The gate, in the North German Brick Gothic style, is located at the Neustädter Wallfriedhof and marks the historic northern entrance to the fortified old town. The gable shows late Gothic ornaments on both sides. The gate is one of the few preserved ones and can still be passed by cars and pedestrians. https://www.fachwerkfreunde.de/index.php/bundeslaender/sachsen-anhalt/salzwedel/artikel-steintor-937
