The Treidler Treidler (haulers) pulled the ships upstream with long ropes attached to a mast on the foredeck (the so-called "treidelmast") or led a draft animal. For this reason, so-called treidel paths still exist along the Rhine today. They moved forward at a speed of about two kilometers per hour; per day, haulers could pull a ship a maximum of 15 to 20 kilometers. The heavy work, which demanded a certain "rhythmization" from the people, was often accompanied by monotonous songs or the rhythmic striking of a hauling stick. The "Leinpfade" (rope paths), which still exist in many places, also date back to hauling – because "Leine" refers to the rope with which people or animals pulled a ship along the Rhine. And because the ships pulled by humans mostly only made very slow progress, the word "treideln" developed into the still known and used word "trödeln" today. The word treideln is derived from the Latin tragulare (to pull, to drag), as the ancient Romans already used the technique of hauling.
