The historic town hall was built in the early 17th century in the Weser Renaissance style. Characteristic features are the gables with semicircular tops ("Welsche Giebel"). Today, the historic town hall houses the registry office, the tourist information center, and the "Ratkeller". On the back of the building, there is a relief plaque from the Gothic period depicting a drinking monkey, which is intended to symbolically express the vice of gluttony or excess. Beautiful old Gothic town hall of the town of Stadthagen on the market square with its many half-timbered houses.

The spacious rectangular square, planned from the outset as an economic center, was originally separated from the church district to the east by a town hall. From the market, two main streets each lead south (Obernstr./Klosterstr.) and north (Niedernstr./Echternstr.) at its ends, leading to the gates (Oberntor/Niederntor). The names reflect the gradient of the water supply, which was important when the city was founded; the name Echternstraße (achtern=rear street) becomes understandable when looking west from the church. The layout of the old town shows a spindle shape, typical of the princely foundation cities of the late Stauffer period.

Stadthagen is a planned settlement founded in 1225 as indago comitis adolphi (Hagen of Count Adolf). For this purpose, he had the forest cleared and a castle built. Stadthagen also received a city wall around 1400, parts of which still survive from this period. Today, Stadthagen still boasts a beautiful old town, where the planned construction is still clearly visible. The entire fortifications can also be explored in a beautiful park, allowing you to walk around the entire town.

The beautiful Weser Renaissance town hall was built between 1595 and 1602 in two construction phases according to the plans of the master builder Jörg Unkair.
