A Unique Monument to Charity Did you know that the castle church and the almshouses form a closely connected ensemble? Peter Rantzau had the two rows of white houses built between 1594 and 1596, at the same time as the church. The Connection: The arrangement is no accident – the almshouses flank the church like "outstretched arms." They were intended to make the Christian commandment of love for one's neighbor visible right next to the house of worship. The Function: While the church was built for the salvation of souls, the almshouses served as one of the first social foundations in the region. The 17 small residential units provided accommodation for the poor, the sick, and the elderly. Today: What is special about this ensemble is its continuity. Even today, over 400 years later, the apartments are still used by the parish for people in social need.
