The Elbe barge Catharina is a traditional ship, restored and moored in the port of Krautsand. A fantastic cycling and hiking trail runs along the harbor and through beautiful natural scenery along the dike.

The crane's interior although the crane looks quite old, it is relatively young. It was only built in 1977, modeled after one in Lüneburg. Citizens of Stade, local businesses, and the Stade Rotary Club donated the money to make it possible to recreate Stade's beloved landmark. An exhibition inside the crane provides information about the history of the Hanseatic League, the port's history, the shipyards, and, of course, the wooden crane itself.

It was destroyed by fire. A fire destroyed the cranes. The great city fire of 1659 was the cause and a great calamity. Two years later, the new crane was already built. The two enormous treadwheels were now located inside the 15-meter-high and 6.5-meter-wide treadwheel crane. At the end of the 19th century, the cranes had to make way for a road widening. At that time, fewer and fewer merchant ships were docking in Stade, which is why the crane was no longer needed. And the residents were tired of the noise from the treadwheels.
