In the Gersthofen Balloon Museum you can vividly experience the history of balloonists in Germany. Since 1985, the Gersthofen Balloon Museum has been housed in the old Gersthofen water tower north of Augsburg. As the museum has grown over the years, it was expanded with a new building in 2003 and now offers even more exhibition space. It's not without reason that the balloon museum is in this region. Augsburg had been the focus of German balloonists from early on. In 1786, Maximilian Freiherr von Lütgendorf tried - unfortunately unsuccessfully - to become the first German to ascend in a balloon in Augsburg's Siebentischwald. After the city of Augsburg banned the aviation pioneer from taking off again, he tried in Gersthofen, then a small town. Today a faithful replica of his gondola can be seen here in the Augsburg Balloon Museum.

The Ballonmuseum Gersthofen is one of the world's largest and oldest museums for the technology and history of ballooning! On four levels you can find out everything about the beginnings and history of ballooning, about the technology, production and ballooning, the scientific and military use of the balloon, as well as records and catastrophes. I did the tour with an audio guide. So I was able to sit down and just listen to the explanations about the exhibits. Detailed information can be found at https://www.ballonmuseum-gersthofen.de/
