Another landmark of Geithain is the imposing powder tower from around 1200. At that time, a small, castle-like building belonged to the tower, where the bailiff had his seat. He administered the city and was also responsible for jurisdiction until the late Middle Ages. In the lower, windowless area, a prison was set up for thieves and robbers. They were given something to eat and drink through a hatch on the upper floor. Later, when Geithain was a garrison town, gunpowder was also stored in the tower - which gives the "powder tower" its name. A small exhibition in the inner area tells of this exciting time. Originally, the powder tower was part of the medieval city wall that surrounded the entire city. With its impressive 28 meters high, it served as a watchtower to protect Geithain. From here, the watchman could oversee the entire area, spot approaching enemies early on and warn the citizens of an attack. Even today, the upper floor offers a wonderful view of Geithain and the surrounding area.
