The best family-friendly hikes and walks around Legden

The Haus von Hülst is an important, listed bourgeois house in the historic town center of Legden. It is a representative, single-story brick house built on a solid sandstone base. Beneath the house is the vaulted cellar of a predecessor building, which probably dates back to the 14th century. The baroque decorations, the window frames, the corner quoins, as well as the striking crow-stepped gable with its volutes and ball finials are made of sandstone. Above the ground floor windows are wall anchors indicating the year of construction, 1677. Another detail is a small dovecote crowning the gable. In the associated garden stands a two-story half-timbered house from the second half of the 18th century, which formerly housed a large, brick oven system. The house was built in the 17th century by the patrician family Menke. Later, it passed into the possession of the Busch family (after whom the street Busshook is also named). The building owes its current name to the administrator of Hülst. At the beginning of the 20th century (until 1911), the estate served the von Hülst family for generations as a residence and administrative seat for the municipality of Legden. After the historic building had fallen into severe disrepair in the late 20th century, it was extensively renovated in 1988 and later modernized in terms of energy efficiency. Today, the Haus von Hülst, including the park, is privately owned and inhabited. For this reason, the estate cannot be visited from the inside, but can be viewed from the outside when passing by (for example, along the well-known 100 Castles Route).

The Haus Weßling (often also written as Wesslingsches Haus) is a significant, listed building in the historic center of Legden. You can find it at the address Busshook 6. It is a single-story, representative town house (formerly used as a rectory) made of bricks, standing on a solid sandstone base. It was built at the beginning of the 19th century. The window and door surrounds are made of sandstone and are – just like the front door itself – still preserved in their original state. On the south side of the house, there is a bakehouse, which even dates back to 1768. Also remarkable is the area directly in front of the house. The street pavement there consists of glacial erratic (Saale glaciation), which gives the street a particularly historic charm.

It is a quietly located forest area near the Egelborg house.

On the outskirts of Legden, you will find this barbecue area along the fish ponds by the Dinkel river. It offers a wonderful opportunity to linger and celebrate in the fresh air. This barbecue area can be rented from the local association Heimatverein Legden - for a fee. The water castle complex was originally located on two islands; today, the outer bailey and the main castle are united and surrounded by two moats.
