Under the name Kunsthalle Bernburg, the former riding hall in the Marstall (now Town Hall II) is used as an exhibition space for contemporary art. Without the possibility of undergoing extensive restoration, the hall has been converted to public access in accordance with historic preservation regulations and is operated in cooperation with the City of Bernburg (Saale) and the BFG-Bernburger Freizeit GmbH. A town hall in the old town was first mentioned in 1384. With the unification of the old and new towns (1561), it became the town hall of the valley town. A new building was constructed in 1852, and the last major renovation of the town hall took place in 1874/75. After the merger of the valley town and the mountain town (1825), it served as the sole town hall of the city of Bernburg until 1921. From 1985 to 1990, the building was used as a dormitory for the Institute for Teacher Training. Since 2001, it has served as a teaching building for the Anhalt University of Applied Sciences.
