Au an der Donau is a picturesque place in Upper Austria, known primarily for its location directly on the river and its importance for sustainable tourism. It is a district of the market town of Naarn im Machlande in the district of Perg. Au is located directly in the Machland, a flat Danube floodplain that was formerly often hit by floods. Since the construction of the large Danube flood protection, the place has become safer, but has retained its direct connection to the water. The Danube is a landscape-defining element here and offers wide vistas.

The confluence of the Aist and the Danube is a geographically and ecologically exciting place in Upper Austria's Machland. It is located approximately at the height of Au an der Donau (municipality of Naarn im Machlande). The Aist originates from the confluence of the Feldaist and the Waldaist. It is a typical Mühlviertel river that flows through deeply incised valleys before reaching the flat Machland. Historically, the mouth of the Aist has changed several times. It used to flow directly into the Danube near Au. However, in the course of the power plant construction (Donaukraftwerk Wallsee-Mitterkirchen) and extensive flood protection measures, the mouth area was relocated and regulated.
