The reason why this church was built goes back a long time. In 1083, Count Arnold von Wels donated the town of Wartberg to the Kremsmünster monastery only on condition that a church be built there. In addition, care had to be taken to ensure that the population of this area, who lived so far from the mother church in Kirchdorf an der Krems, received pastoral care. In the 13th century, the church came under the authority of the Passau cathedral chapter, but finally came to the Kremsmünster monastery in 1247.
