From 1228 to 1859 it was the cathedral church of the Salzburg suffragan diocese of Lavant. The first certain mention of the church dates back to the year 890 (in a document by Emperor Arnulf as ad Lavantam ecclesiam sancti Andreae). Around 1225 an Augustinian canonry was founded in St. Andrä. With the establishment of the diocese of Lavant in 1228, it was elevated to a cathedral chapter, which was abolished again in 1798. In 1859 the bishop's seat was transferred to Marburg an der Drau (Lower Styria) / today Maribor and the Carinthian part of the diocese came to the diocese of Gurk.
